Design for Maintainability

Maintainability is the ability of an item, under stated conditions of use, to be retained in, or restored to, a state in which it can perform its required functions when maintenance is performed under stated conditions and using prescribed procedures and resources. The inherent reliability of a device is the maximum reliability that can be achieved if the device is operated and maintained in an optimum manner. The inherent reliability of a device is ultimately dependent upon the configuration and the robustness of the components from which it was constructed.

Such continuous insight into present and future health of machines and their components, as well as the information flow from assets, enable the move to enhance maintenance based on intelligent prognostics, where maintenance actions are synchronised with the overall operation of the system as well as with the necessary maintenance resources and spare parts.
